Dr. Jerome B. Miller Memorial Lecture

 

Course Description:

This course will address both dietary and topical fluoride therapies for children in the context of the changes in the understanding of fluoride mechanisms, benefits in an era of less caries, and recent clinical guidance/best practices. The discussion also will address the mechanisms and effectiveness metal/fluorides. The efficacy of various fluoride therapies (water fluoridation, fluoride supplements, professional applications, and fluoridated toothpaste) in the context of a child’s caries risk assessment will be aimed to help guide clinicians regarding optimizing benefits to their patients. Additionally, the evidence-base for the benefits and risks of water fluoridation will be presented to aid in patient-centered care

Learning Objectives:

  1. Identify the mechanisms of action of fluorides.
  2. Compare the concentrations and efficacies of professional and home fluoride therapies.
  3. Recommend fluoride therapies for children that are at low and elevated risk.
  4. Assess he controversies and evidence regarding water fluoridation to enable shared decision-making between the provider and patient.


Presenter Biography: 

 

Dr. Norman Tinanoff received his dental degree from the University of Maryland. After receiving his certificate and master’s degree in Pediatric Dentistry at the University of Iowa, he spent another year at the V.A. Hospital in Iowa City in a research fellowship. Dr. Tinanoff's two-year military service was at the Army Institute of Dental Research at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. For 23 years he was at the University of Connecticut Health Center where he was director of the Pediatric Dentistry graduate program for 16 years. From 1999 to 2016 he was Chair of the Department of Pediatric Dentistry at the University of Maryland. He has been Board Certified since 1983. Dr. Tinanoff has authored or co-authored over 240 publications, primarily on fluoride mechanisms, antimicrobials, caries risk factors, early childhood caries and prevention. His current interests are concerned with preventing dental caries, oral health access for underserved child populations, and developing clinical policies and guidelines


This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the standards of the Academy of General Dentistry Program Approval for Continuing Education (PACE) through program approval of the College of Diplomates of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry. COD is approved for awarding FAGD/MAGD credit.
A maximum of 1.5 CE credit hours are available.

COD Cancellation Policy and Liability for Annual Meeting & Symposium 2025
 
By Registrant:
Refunds, minus a $20.00 administrative fee, will be issued on written cancellations received on or before May 1, 2025. Registration fees will only be refunded to the person who paid the registration fees, by the same method as the original payment (i.e. credit card, check, etc.) and in the case of a credit card only to the same credit card used to pay the registration fees. Telephone cancellations ARE NOT accepted. No refund requests will be offered after May 1, 2025.

By COD: 
COD reserves the right to cancel, shorten, delay, or otherwise alter or change the meeting in their discretion. If the entire meeting is cancelled COD’s sole obligation is to refund registration fees paid to COD for the meeting by a registrant. If the meeting is delayed, shortened or otherwise altered or changed, COD may in its discretion refund the registration fees paid to COD by a registrant on a prorated basis, but is under no obligation to do so. Registration fees will only be refunded to the person who paid the registration fees, by the same method as the original payment (i.e. credit card, check, etc.) and in the case of a credit card only to the same credit card used to pay the registration fees. COD is not liable for direct, indirect, incidental, consequential, exemplary, punitive, or damages of any other kind, regardless of the nature of the cause of action that may be asserted. COD is not responsible and shall not pay for costs associated with travel, airfare, lodging, food, transportation or other costs or losses incurred by a registrant in connection with the meeting or as a result of the meeting being cancelled, shortened, delayed, or otherwise altered or changed. Registrants are solely responsible for such costs and losses and it is recommended that registrants consider purchasing sufficient insurance to cover such costs and losses. Under no circumstances shall COD’s liability to any registrant exceed the registration fees paid by the registrant to COD in connection with the meeting.
