Learning Objectives: •Describe endodontic treatments that may be appropriate for pediatric patients and indications for their use •Consider how clinician decision-making regarding the endodontic treatment of pediatric patients may differ by specialty type •Discuss factors associated with endodontic treatment outcomes in pediatric patients Presenter Biography: Dr. Lorel Burns is an Associate Professor of Endodontics at New York University (NYU) College of Dentistry and a Diplomate of the American Board of Endodontics. She earned her DDS degree at NYU College of Dentistry (2015), completed her specialty training in Endodontics at the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine (2017) and was awarded her master’s degree (MS) in Clinical Investigation by NYU School of Medicine (2019). Dr. Burns is a clinician-investigator, and her endodontic research program focuses on clinician decision-making, endodontic treatment utilization and outcomes, and oral health policy evaluation. Her research on the endodontic treatment of pediatric populations has been funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH)/ National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR), the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF). Her research findings have been published in the Journal of Endodontics (JOE), the International Endodontic Journal (IEJ), the Journal of the American Dental Association (JADA), the International Journal of Pediatric Dentistry (IJPD), and the Journal of Dental Education (JDE). In 2019, Dr. Burns was selected as the AAE Foundation’s Endodontic Educator Fellow. In 2022, she recognized with the American Dental Education Association (ADEA) Junior Faculty Award. She served (2023-2024) as the Oral Health Policy Fellow at the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). Dr. Burns is an attending at Bellevue Hospital Center, where she provides endodontic treatment for patients with special needs in the operating room, under general anesthesia.
