2026 N. Sue Seale Pediatric Dentistry Research Award Foundation of the College of Diplomates of the ABPD

Purpose: The award honors Dr. Sue Seale whose research advanced the discipline of pediatric dentistry through the pursuit of evidence-based knowledge. Dr. Seale made an enduring difference in the professional paths of pediatric dentistry graduate students by supporting their research. Her primary research area was tooth pulp therapy. Numerous published articles and book chapters is a testament of her work.

Award: The FCOD is proud that a $10,000 research award is available each year to support:
1. Full time faculty in the first 10 years of their career.
2. Whose research helps to advance the practice of Pediatric Dentistry.

Qualified Applicants: The Dr. N Sue Seale Research Award is available for application who are full-time faculty and fulfill the following criteria:
1. Employed in a department of pediatric dentistry (undergraduate or graduate programs) in a university or hospital setting.
2. Employed for 10 years or less of their academic career (Initial hire date = start of academic career.)
3. Holds Diplomate status and has participated in the ABPD certification process.
4. Conducting research designed to further the science and knowledge of pediatric dentistry in any of its various aspects: clinical, behavioral, basic science.
5. Research may have begun during residence and is in the final phase.

Non-Qualified Applicants:
1. A previous Seale Awardee whose project and stewardship have not been fully completed.
2. A previous Seale Awardee may reapply based on new research five (5) years after the first awarded project and stewardship are complete.

Deadline: A complete application must be received on or before February 15, 2026*. Please mail, fax or email materials all at one time.
Incomplete materials will not be considered.

Strength and significance of research hypothesis and background pediatric dentistry (20 points): *Include a personal statement about why you are interested in the area of pediatric dentistry you are researching. Specifically, the significance of the research project and its outcomes should be described relative to current literature and research data. Applicants are encouraged to address identified items in documents that address new or emerging issues in pediatric dentistry. Literature Review (not scored)Attach the Literature Review that serves to situate the proposed project within the body of the relevant literature providing context for the project. The Literature Review is to present the current knowledge of the project’s topic including substantive findings as well as theoretical and methodological contributions. Description of project (20 points): *Describe the project and identify the project objectives. The role of the collaborating educational institution and any collaborating pediatric dentistry or dentistry organization (501 (c) 3) should be included. Applicants are encouraged to address identified new and emerging research issues.	1500 of 1500 characters remaining
Rationale and health outcomes of project (20 points): *Address the rationale for choosing the project, based on current peer review publications, research studies or any citations from abstracts. Concise description of the research hypothesis(es) and specific outcome measures must be stated. Relevance of the outcome measures should be discussed.	1500 of 1500 characters remaining
Methodology (30 points): *- Address the proposed methods to accomplish the project, including length of project, proposed methods and timeline for completion. The timeline must include projected month and year of project start and project completion. Both medical and dental literature should be cited. Please include the method of evaluation (statistical analysis) of the anticipated research results. - A copy of IRB approval, if applicable, must be included in this section.	2000 of 2000 characters remaining
