Program Outline:

This lecture discusses Culinary Medicine which blends science together with nutrition knowledge and the art of cooking. It brings the concept of food as medicine integrating food into the management, prevention, and, in some cases, even reversal of diseases empowering patients to improve their health outcomes

Learning Objectives:

1. Understand the relationship of food and chronic diseases
2. Discuss food as medicine benefits & strategies 
3. Learn about culinary medicine and how it works  
4. Examine some healthy effects of the anti-inflammatory diet

 Presenter Biography:

Dr. Debora Duro is the Program Director of Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition and Medical Director “FIRST for Children” (Florida Intestinal Rehabilitation Support and Treatment) Program at Salah Foundation Children’s Hospital at Broward Health Medical Center in Ft Lauderdale, FL, USA. She graduated as an MD from the PUC-RS Pontificia University Catholic in South of Brazil and thereafter obtained her pediatric residency training at Miami Children Hospital. She did her clinical fellowship in Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition at Boston Children Hospital and Massachusetts General Hospital, both affiliated with Harvard Medical School, Boston, MA.

She has a Master of Science degree in Dietetics and Nutrition at Florida International University, Miami, FL and certified on Plant based Nutrition by eCornell University, NY. She also has a degree as a culinary chef coaching at the Harvard Medical University and holds an appointment as an Associate Professor in Clinical Pediatrics at both Florida International University in Miami and Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale. Dr. Duro is a Board member of Obesity and Nutrition section of the Florida Chapter American Academy of Pediatrics (FCAAP). She is also a member of the American College of Lifestyle Medicine (ACLM) and served as a Chair of the Nutrition Committee of “NASPGHAN” North American Society for Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition from 2022-2025 where she introduced Culinary Medicine during her term. Now she is serving as a current Chair of this new SIG “Special Interest Group” for NASPGHAN on Culinary Medicine and has published several articles on this field.
