What are Adverse Childhood Experiences? And how might they impact teeth? This seminar will cover research that shows how Adverse Childhood Experiences impact the timing of tooth eruption and tooth development from both human data and mouse models. The long-term goal of this research is to show that dentists, especially pediatric dentist, may be able to play a critical role in identifying these children to help them get the resources they need.

Presenter Biography:
Erin Ealba Bumann, DDS, PhD, MS, FAAPD has been a tenure-track Assistant Professor in the Department of Oral and Craniofacial Sciences at the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) School of Dentistry since September 2017. She received
her BS in Anthropology/Zoology and DDS from the University of Michigan in 2004 and 2008, respectfully. She subsequently received her PhD in Oral and Craniofacial Sciences from the University of California, San Francisco in 2013. She then conducted
post-doctoral training in craniofacial biology and completed her residency and MS in Pediatric Dentistry at the University of Michigan in 2017. Dr. Bumann has been a Board-Certified Pediatric Dentist since 2018. Dr. Bumann’s research is currently
funded by NIH/NIDCR, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the American Dental Association and BioNexus.

Nicola Innes is a Professor of Paediatric Dentistry, Honorary Consultant and Head of Cardiff Dental School. She obtained a PhD, a BDS(hons), and a BMSc in Molecular and Cellular Pathology from the University of Dundee as well as a BSc
in Life Sciences from Napier University, Edinburgh. She has passed membership exams with the Royal College of Surgeons of England for the Faculty of General Dental Practitioners and the Faculty of Dental Surgery.
Professor Innes’
research is based around improving dental care, in particular cariology (minimal intervention), paediatric (Child Friendly) dentistry, marginalised communities, evidence-based and translational/educational oral health fields. Her expertise
is in primary research through clinical trials/ observational studies and secondary systematic reviews/ data syntheses.

Presenter Biography:
Sarah Armstrong, MD, FAAP attended
medical school at the University of Virginia and completed a pediatrics residency at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia in 2003. Dr. Armstrong’s clinical and research interests focus on the treatment of obesity in children through basic,
clinical, and community-engaged research methods. She founded and directs the Duke Healthy Lifestyles Program, a pediatric obesity center providing behavioral, nutrition, exercise, pharmacotherapy, and surgical treatment options for patients
aged 23 and younger. She also developed and has sustained since 2009 the Bull City Fit program, a community partnership between Duke Children’s and the City of Durham, which delivers obesity treatment to children and families through a local
Parks and Recreation center. This model has been disseminated widely, and has informed national guidelines for clinic-community partnerships for the treatment of childhood obesity. Dr. Armstrong was awarded the “Outstanding Advocate for Children”
by the NC Pediatrics Society for this work. Dr. Armstrong serves in several leadership roles, including Chair of the Section of Obesity for the American Academy of Pediatrics, Director for the Duke Center for Childhood Obesity Research, and
as Chief of the Division of General Pediatrics and Adolescent Health at Duke University. Dr. Armstrong co-authored the 2023 AAP Clinical Practice Guidelines on the Evaluation and Treatment of Pediatric Obesity, is a co-editor for the international
textbook on clinical care of obesity in adults and children, was the lead author for the 2019 AAP policy statement on bariatric surgery in adolescents, and has authored multiple additional policy statements on the care of children with obesity.
Sarah lives in Chapel Hill, NC with her husband, 3 children, 2 dogs and cat. She is a big fan of the US Women’s Soccer Team and loves to climb mountains, stare at waterfalls, sleep under the stars, and cook unreasonable amounts of Italian
food for family and friends.

Juan F. Yepes DDS, MD, MPH, MS, DrPH is a full professor in the Department of Pediatric
Dentistry and the Associate Dean for Graduate Education at Indiana University School of Dentistry and an attending at Riley Children Hospital in Indianapolis, Indiana. Juan F. is a dentist (DDS) and a physician (MD) from Javeriana University
at Bogotá, Colombia. In 1999, Juan F. moved to the USA and attended the University of Iowa and the University of Pennsylvania where he completed a fellowship and residency in Radiology and Oral Medicine respectively in 2002 and 2004. In 2006,
Juan F. completed a master’s in public health (MPH), and in 2011 a Doctoral Degree in Public Health (DrPH) both with emphasis in Epidemiology at the University of Kentucky College of Public Health. In 2008, Juan F. completed a residency program
in Dental Public Health at University of Texas, Baylor College of Dentistry. Finally, Juan F. completed a residency program and a master in pediatric dentistry at the University of Kentucky in 2012.
Juan F. is board-certified by
the American Boards of Pediatric Dentistry, Oral Medicine, and Dental Public Health. He is an active member of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, American Academy of Oral Medicine, American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology,
Indiana Dental Association, and American Dental Association. Juan F. is a fellow in dental surgery from the Royal College of Surgeons at Edinburgh. He is a member of the editorial board of Oral Surgery, Oral Medicine, Oral Pathology, and Oral
Radiology. Finally, Juan F is the associate editor of the Journal of the American Dental Association (JADA)

rank of Assistant Professor. Dr. Ahmed attended medical school at Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine in Rochester, MN. She completed her radiation oncology residency at Mayo Clinic in Rochester and served as the Chief Resident her last year
of training. Dr. Ahmed specializes in treating pediatric cancers, sarcoma, and breast cancer. She is actively involved in cancer committees both within the Mayo Clinic and at the national level for pediatric oncology and sarcoma. She engages
in clinical research and prospective clinical trials aimed to improve radiation related treatment outcomes for patients. She also enjoys teaching and mentoring medical students and residents.

Taylor is a member of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, the American Dental Association, the Southeastern Society of Pediatric Dentistry. He has been honored to be choose as a fellow in the American College of Dentist (FACD). He
is a past president of the Georgia Academy of Pediatric Dentistry. Besides being a national speaker he has presented to postgraduate pediatric dental residency programs. His post-graduate continuing education special interest include extensive
course work in dental facial esthetics and orthodontics.

Presentation Outline:
Dental caries remains a substantial health problem in the United States. Understanding the multifactorial nature of dental caries and issues surrounding the oral microorganisms and biofilm provide new insights into potential prevention strategies. The armamentarium for managing caries is diverse, but highly effective when applied appropriately to help manage this chronic disease. Different therapeutic approaches should be selectively prescribed depending on the patient’s caries risk factors, lifestyle and commitment to change. The course presents the current information on the etiology of dental caries related to genetics and environmental factors and for our current preventive treatment approaches including diet modification, fluoride treatments, antimicrobial therapy, mechanical plaque control and non-surgical approaches.
Learning Objectives:
- Be familiar with the risk factors associate with early childhood caries and opportunities for interventions directed at preventing the disease
- To be familiar with the indications, contraindications, clinical application and evidence supporting the use of currently available caries preventive therapeutics.
- To understand the different types of topical silver products available including their purported mechanisms of action in caries management.

Tim Wright received his DDS degree from West Virginia University and completed his Pediatric Dentistry
training and Master of Science Degree at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. He currently is the Bawden Distinguished Professor in the Division of Pediatric Dentistry and Public Health at The Adams School of Dentistry at the University
of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, where he has also served as Pediatric Dentistry Department Chair and Department of Endodontics Interim Chair. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry, a Fellow of the American Academy
for the Advancement of Science, and a Past President of the American Association of Dental Research. He has Chaired the Counsel of Scientific Affairs for the American Dental Association and American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry. He
has published over 200 peer reviewed scientific manuscripts, edited two textbooks and authored 24 text chapters. Dr. Wright is the Editor in Chief of the Journal of the American Dental Association.
