Course Description: After decades of relative neglect by the profession and researchers, developmental dental defects ("D3s", or "chalky teeth") are rapidly gaining cross-sector recognition as a global health problem, under the auspices of 'The D3 Group for developmental dental defects' (D3G; thed3group.org). Molar hypomineralization (MH) is of particular concern as a major risk factor for "unpreventable" childhood tooth decay. Leveraging D3G's unique educational resources, this presentation will outline the 3-level "MH problem", ranging from clinical challenges and solutions through to worldwide needs for research, education and public health management.
Drawing on their experiences as (1) a pediatric dentist and hospital director; and (2) a University-based biomedical researcher/academic, the speakers will provide a unique "translational" perspective on how the clinical and research aspects of this problem might be turned to social advantage. This 'Chalky Teeth Clinic' will focus on clinical issues and their scientific foundations, and how practitioners can join D3G's holistic attack on the MH problem.
Learning Objectives:
1. Understand D3G definitions – D3s, MH, chalky teeth, science translation to social good 2. Be familiar with the clinical problems, scientific foundations, global health opportunities of MH 3. Learn preventive approaches to MH – dental and medical levels, research needs 4. Learn how MH guidelines, translational communication, science & D3G can together lead to social good Presenter Biographies: Hosts of D3G's 'International Symposia on Molar Hypomineralisation & Chalky Teeth' (thed3group.org/toronto2020), Drs Casas and Ganss bring a wonderful combination of clinical experience and scientific acumen to this unique learning experience.
Michael Casas completed his undergraduate dental training at the Faculty of Dentistry of Western University. After a dental residency at The Hospital for Sick Children, he undertook specialty training in Pediatric Dentistry at the University of Toronto where he also completed a Master of Science in neurophysiology. He returned to SickKids as a staff dentist in 1991 and was appointed Director of Dental Clinics in 2007 and Dentist-in-Chief in 2018. Having published one of the first American studies on MH prevalence, his current research activity focuses on simulation tools for measuring clinician competence and access to pediatric oral care.
Ben Ganss has a PhD in biochemistry & molecular biology, and is a research professor and former Vice Dean (Research) at the University of Toronto's Faculty of Dentistry. His research has focused on the molecular mechanisms of enamel formation since the early 2000s. Having discovered some of the key mechanisms for enamel mineralization, this research is now being translated to various clinical challenges including MH and chalky teeth. Outside the lab, he promotes D3G among academic institutions, research networks, public health and child care programs in Canada and beyond.
This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the standards of the Academy of General Dentistry Program Approval for Continuing Education (PACE) through program approval of the College of Diplomates of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry. COD is approved for awarding FAGD/MAGD credit.
A maximum of 1.5 CE credit hours are available. ‘Participants must be cautioned about the hazards of using limited knowledge when integrating new techniques into
their practices.’
